What Is a Nakshatra?

The Moon's path is split into 27 equal parts of 13°20'. Each one is a nakshatra, or star. The Moon takes about a day to cross one.

In Kerala, the star at sunrise is the naal of the day. Birthdays are celebrated on it. Temple offerings are booked by it. And the birth star is the first thing an astrologer asks for.

Each nakshatra has four padas of 3°20'. The pada at birth decides the first letter of the name and the starting dasha.

Chandrashtamam, Explained

When the Moon passes through the 8th sign from your birth Moon sign, it's your Chandrashtamam. It lasts about two and a half days, once a month.

People skip big decisions in this window. Signing deals, starting journeys, first meetings. Routine work is fine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Nakshatra is today? +

On Tuesday, 31 July 2035, the nakshatra at sunrise is Rohini, രോഹിണി in Malayalam. It runs until 08:28 AM, after which Mrigashira (Makayiram) begins.

Why does the nakshatra change in the middle of the day? +

The Moon moves through one nakshatra roughly every 24 hours, but the change can happen at any time of day or night. In Kerala the star "of the day" is the one running at sunrise, which is why calendars show one name even when another starts later.

What is Chandrashtamam today? +

Today the Moon is in the 8th sign from Libra (Thulam), so Chandrashtamam applies to people born under Chithira, Chothi, Vishakham. It lasts about two and a half days and people avoid important new work during it.

Are nakshatra timings the same across India? +

Yes. The Moon enters a nakshatra at the same moment everywhere, so these IST timings work for every city in India. Only the sunrise changes, which can decide the star of the day in borderline cases.

How do I find my own birth nakshatra? +

You need the date, time and place of birth. Our free Jathakam report shows your birth star, pada and Moon sign.

Which ayanamsa do you use? +

We use the Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa, the standard followed by the Indian government calendar and most Kerala panchangams.
