How We Check Chovva Dosham
Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from the Lagna makes chovva dosham. That's the rule Kerala and Tamil astrologers follow.
We also count from the Moon and Venus and show you both. But the verdict goes by the Lagna, the same way our porutham report does it. So you'll never get one answer here and another in the report.

What is chovva dosham? +
Chovva dosham (Kuja dosha, Sevvai dosham) is when Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of a horoscope. In Kerala it is one of the first things checked before marriage.
Is chovva dosham counted from Lagna or Moon? +
In the Kerala method the main count is from the Lagna. The position from the Moon and Venus is also looked at, and we show all three, but the verdict here follows the Lagna.
What does "dosham cancelled" mean? +
Classical texts list many placements that remove the harm of Mars: Mars in its own or exalted sign, Jupiter's aspect, Mars with the Moon, and so on. If any of them is present in your chart, the dosham is treated as cancelled (dosha bhanga). We list each rule that applies.
Can a person with chovva dosham marry someone without it? +
Traditionally a chart with chovva dosham is matched with another chart that has it, so the two balance out (dosha samyam). Where the dosham is cancelled, astrologers are more flexible. A full porutham check looks at both charts together.
Why do I need my exact birth time? +
The Lagna changes about every two hours, and chovva dosham is counted from it. A wrong time can move Mars into or out of a dosha house.
Is this different from the North Indian Manglik check? +
Yes. The North Indian method makes you Manglik if Mars is in a dosha house from either the Lagna or the Moon, and it uses a different list of cancellations. So the same chart can be Manglik there and free of dosham here, or the other way round.
