How is KP different from traditional Vedic astrology?

Traditional Vedic astrology reads mainly through sign, house and nakshatra placements and the Lahiri Ayanamsa. KP adds the Sub Lord (and Sub-Sub Lord) as the deciding factor, uses the Krishnamurti Ayanamsa and Placidus houses, and relies heavily on significators and Ruling Planets for precise timing.

What are House and Planet Significators?

A significator is a planet capable of giving the results of a house. KP ranks significators in four levels of strength — from a planet in the star of a house's occupant down to the house's owner — and checks these links across houses to judge whether an event will happen.

What are Ruling Planets used for?

Ruling Planets are the Day Lord plus the Ascendant's and Moon's sign, star and sub lords at a given moment. They're used to verify a birth time is correct, and in horary (Prashna) astrology to answer a question asked right now without a birth chart.

Why does the KP Dasha go up to Pratyantardasha?

KP timing works by checking whether the current Mahadasha, Antardasha and Pratyantardasha lords all connect, through their Sub Lords, to the houses an event concerns. Showing all three levels lets you narrow a prediction down to a specific period rather than just a multi-year phase.
