How the Nakshatra Finder Works
Your birth star is simply where the Moon was when you were born. The sky is cut into 27 equal parts of 13°20′. Each part is a nakshatra.
We work it out with the Swiss Ephemeris and the Lahiri ayanamsa, using the exact latitude and longitude of your birth place. It's the same engine behind our Jathakam and Porutham reports.
Born close to a change of star? A few minutes can flip the result. So use the time on your birth certificate if you have it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Janma Nakshatra (birth star)? +
It is the nakshatra the Moon was passing through at the moment you were born. It is used for naming, birthdays, temple offerings and marriage matching across South India.
Why do I need the exact birth time and place? +
The Moon crosses one nakshatra in about a day, so a birth close to a change-over can fall in either star. Time and place also decide your Lagna, which changes roughly every two hours.
My star here is different from what my family told me. Why? +
Usually the birth was close to a change of star, or the recorded time is approximate. Some older calendars also used a slightly different ayanamsa. We use Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), the standard for Indian panchangams today.
What is pada? +
Each nakshatra is split into four quarters called padas, so there are 108 in all. The pada decides the Navamsa sign of the Moon and the first letter traditionally used for a name.
What is the dasha balance at birth? +
You are born into the Vimshottari dasha of your birth star's lord. The part of the star the Moon had not yet crossed decides how many years of that dasha were left at birth.
