Vedic (sidereal). We subtract the Lahiri ayanamsa, currently 24°13'51", from the true positions. Western sites use the tropical zodiac, so their signs are usually one sign ahead of ours.
The Lagna depends on the exact time and place and moves through all 12 signs in a day. The planets themselves are in the same sign for everyone at a given moment.
A planet looks like it is moving backwards from Earth for a while. Rahu and Ketu always move this way, so we don't flag them separately in the chart.
A planet too close to the Sun is called combust (moudhyam). Its results are said to weaken while it is hidden in the Sun's glare.
Mandi (Gulika) is a sensitive point used heavily in Kerala astrology. It is worked out from the weekday and the sunrise or sunset time, and is shown in every traditional grahanila.
