What Is Yoga in Panchangam?

Forget the mat. In the Panchangam, yoga is a number. You add the Sun's longitude to the Moon's and divide the circle into 27 parts.

Each part is 13°20' wide, the same size as a nakshatra. The yoga you're in tells you the "mood" of that stretch of time.

It's called Nitya Yoga to keep it apart from the special yogas in a birth chart, like Gajakesari or Raja Yoga.

How Families Use It

Most people don't pick a date by yoga alone. They check it last, after the nakshatra and tithi look good.

If the yoga is Vyatipata or Vaidhriti, the date usually gets dropped. The other bad yogas are often tolerated if everything else is strong.

Want a ready list of good days? The Malayalam Panchangam marks muhurtham dates for weddings, housewarming and more.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Yoga today? +

On Friday, 18 December 2026, the yoga at sunrise is Vyatipata (വ്യതിപാതം), running until 12:19 PM. It is considered inauspicious.

What is Yoga in Panchangam? +

Here yoga does not mean the exercise. It is one of the five limbs of the Panchangam, worked out from the combined longitude of the Sun and the Moon. Every 13 degrees 20 minutes of that total is one yoga, so there are 27 of them.

Which yogas are bad? +

Vishkambha, Atiganda, Shula, Ganda, Vyaghata, Vajra, Vyatipata, Parigha and Vaidhriti are treated as inauspicious. Vyatipata and Vaidhriti are the two that almost every tradition avoids completely for weddings and housewarmings.

Is yoga time the same everywhere in India? +

Yes. A yoga changes at the same moment everywhere, so these IST timings work across India. Only the sunrise differs, which can decide the yoga "of the day".

How long does one yoga last? +

Usually about a day, anywhere from roughly 20 to 26 hours depending on how fast the Moon is moving. Some days see two or even three yogas.

Why can your time differ by a minute from other sites? +

Yoga depends on the Sun and Moon together, so a tiny difference in ayanamsa is counted twice. We use standard Lahiri (Chitrapaksha) ayanamsa and calculate to the second.
